(1) Avijja

(Ignorance or delusion)

(Ignorance of Four Noble Truths)

Avijja-paccaya Sankhara

Avijja conditions Sankhara.

Dependent on ignorance of the Four Noble Truths (avijja) arise activities (Sankhara): rebirth-producing volitions or Kamma formation).

Avijja tricks beings by making life appear to them as pleasant and permanent.

(2) Sankhara

(Kamma-formation)

Sankhara-paccayaVinnanam

Sankhara conditions Vinnana.

Dependent on kamma formations arises rebirth-consciousness (vinnana) for the first time at conception in the mother's womb.

Sankhara make Vinnana(rebirth consciousness) arise and all 32 lokiya-vipeka cittas are produced to represent Vinnana.

From the moment of conception, the rebirth consciousness (vinnana) of the embryo has been functioning until death.

Vinnana-paccaya Nama-rupam

Vinnana conditions Nama-rupam .

Simultaneous with the arising of consciousness, it brings into effect the interplay of mind and body (Nama-rupa).

Nama-rupa-paccaya Salayatanam

Dependent on mind and body are six sense bases (Salayatana) .

(6 Sense Bases: eye, ear, nose, tongue, body & mind)

Salayatana-paccaya Phasso

Salayatana brings about contact or sensorial or mental impressions (Phassa).

Phassa results in feeling (Vedana).

Vedana-paccaya Tanha

Dependent on feeling arises craving (Tanha).

Craving develops into grasping or clinging

(9) Upadana

(Grasping
compulsive craving)

Upadana-paccaya Bhavo

Grasping is the cause of volitional acts of Kamma-bhava .

Kamma-bhava conditions future rebirth.
